Walters, first leader in The Belfry with Campillo on top

The Extremaduran (-3) finished the first round on the stage of the 1985, 1989 and 2002 Ryder Cup five strokes behind the South African.

South African Justin Walters became the first leader of the UK Championship, which takes place in Sutton Coldfield (England), with a bogey-free route that ended in 64 strokes (eight under par), three less than the quartet that follows him in the classification . Jorge Campillo, from Cáceres, thirteenth with 69 strokes, is the highest ranked Spaniard. Pablo Larrazabal is in 74th place with 73 hits.

The leader benefited from more favorable weather conditions in the morning. Shortly after Walters finished his round, which included six birdies and an eagle, the game was interrupted by rain.

A three strokes from Walters, Frenchman Benjamin Hebert, Swede Joel Sjöholm, Zimbabwean Scott Vincent and Austrian Bernd Wiesberger tied for second place. With this tournament, the European circuit returns, for the first time in twelve years, to The Belfry, four times the scene of the Ryder Cup.
