The 'Cannibal' Evenepoel

The Belgian has won everything he has run in 2020 and will make his debut this Saturday at the Giro de Lombardia as one of the favorites.

They say that comparisons are odious, but there is one that suits Remco Evenepoel like a glove: that of 'Cannibal' Eddy Merckx. Although, at 20 years of age, the pearl of Patrick Lefevere has always been unmarked from that label since he intends to forge his own legend based on triumphs, in the purest style of his compatriot in the 70s.

The greatest talent that cycling has given in recent years has plenty of personality and reasons, despite the fact that in 2020 it is only in its second year on the World Tour. But his numbers are outrageous and sum up so quickly that it scares: Remco has won every race he has participated in this season. In total, nine victories (14 in his career as a professional in less than two seasons), the sequence of which is as follows: stage and general of the Vuelta a San Juan, two stages and general of the Vuelta al Algarve, stage and general of the Tour of Burgos and stage and general of the Tour of Poland.

Monumental debut

With this drunken success, Evenepoel will perform at the 114th Tour of Lombardy this Saturday (Eurosport 2, 4:50 pm), which will mark its premiere at one of the five cycling monuments. His versatility is beyond any doubt and you already know what it is to win one-day events, since his first UCI World Tour category conquest came in 2019 at the San Sebastián Classic. The profile of the Italian event, full of explosive ascents, also suits the Belgian well, as he already demonstrated in the Algarve with a victory in which he reached more than 1,000 watts of power on the ascent to Malhao. In addition, he is in the ideal team to achieve success, a Deceuninck-QuickStep who dominates with authority the one-day races and will tuck him in with such seasoned men as Serry or Devenyns.

If you are able to overcome the traps of the route along its 231 kilometers (the organization reduced the distance by 15 km), you will have many options to break alone (another of its specialties) in the decisive ascents to Civiglio (5 km to the 10%) and San Fermo della Battaglia (2.7 km at 7%). It should surprise a range of favorites, including Jakob Fuglsang and Vincenzo Nibali, but at least the terrain has already memorized it, because Evenepoel arrived in the Lombard region at the beginning of the week: “I checked the route, and I love it! It is a perfect race for me, more complicated than San Sebastián, with chain climbs in the last 20 km. Hopefully I am in a position to opt for victory ”. The 'Cannibal' wants more ...
