Sagan: "Van Aert is a contender for the Tour green jersey"

The seven-time winner of the Tour de France points classification recognized that the young Wout van Aert has the necessary conditions to win it.

If anyone knows what it takes to get on the podium in Paris wearing the green jersey, it's Peter Sagan. The Slovakian has won the points standings seven times in the last eight years - he only did not win it in 2017 - and it has been difficult at times to find a rival who can beat Sagan in this ranking. But this year, the Bora rider will arrive on the Tour with a Giro already on his legs, so he will need a great performance to repeat the green jersey.

One of the favorites to take the points classification is the Belgian Wout van Aert, who at 25 is dazzled at the restart of the races, with victories at Strade Bianche, Milan-San Remo and in the first stage of the Criterium Dauphiné. "Van Aert is a contender for the green jersey, of course. Every year there is someone to win it, although in the last decade I have always mastered them. This year I will try again," Sagan replied to a question about the Belgian.

This year's Tour de France will be Wout van Aert's second participation in the Gallic race, after last year, which ended in disgrace after a very hard fall of the runner in the time trial, suffering important injuries from which he has already recovered . Despite being one of the main candidates for the green jersey, the young Belgian has already made it clear that his intention on the Tour is to help his team to dethrone the Ineos.

For his part, Sagan decided this year to run the Giro d'Italia for the first time and, to do so, give up the classics. The Slovakian is currently contesting the Criterium Dauphiné in preparation for the Italian race, and also for the Tour de France. "I have raced many classics, and this year I decided with my team to race Giro and Tour, it was not a difficult decision. This year, the Giro was more important than the classics," said the seven-time winner of the points classification of the gala round.
