The runners of the Critérium del Dauphiné, with the support of the Association of Professional Cyclists (CPA), have neutralized the first 10 kilometers of the fifth stage of the French race in protest at the dangerous route proposed by the organization in the fourth stage.

The runners have sent a protest signal to the organizers and the UCI, also referring to the falls and serious accidents that occurred during the last races, demanding greater attention to their safety.

The CPA asks the UCI and all cycling parties to create a negotiating table to review the regulations whenever they have a concrete effect both in terms of prescription and sanctions towards the organizers, in order to protect the physical integrity of the runners and can carry out their work safely.

Dumoulin: "Yesterday's descent in Dauphiné was embarrassing"

The fourth stage of the Criterium Dauphiné turned out to be very bumpy, with crashes of leader Primoz Roglic and two important men like Steven Kruijswijk and Emanuel Buchmann, who were forced to abandon the race. Kruijswijk did it with a dislocated shoulder, and Buchmann suffered deep abrasions. Also affected was Gregor Mühlberger, who is awaiting confirmation of a fracture in his arm.

The incident occurred on the descent of Col de Plan Bois, a first-class port through which the stage passed. This descent was presented as very dangerous before the race and, after what happened yesterday, the teammates of the Dutchman from the Jumbo-Visma have harshly criticized the descent of the port. "It was a shame that that descent was in the race. It was very difficult, and the first two or three kilometers were full of gravel, potholes, jumps in the road, falls of 15%. They keep putting things like that in a test .. I am very angry about it and I feel sorry for Stevie, who has to go home when he was in a good moment. I hope he is well for the Tour, although even if this comes it is not the best for his preparation, "said a hardcore Tom Dumoulin.

The Jumbo knew of the danger of the descent, but even that did not prevent them from losing one of their most important men. "This descent should never be in a race. We were fighting with several teams to go in first position and we got it, but Groupama came and they put first. The gravel appeared on the ground and Kruijswijk slipped", sentenced the Dutchman,

Dumoulin was not the only rider from the yellow formation to criticize the descent of the Col de Plan Bois. Wout van Aert, winner of the first stage of the Dauphiné, also rebuked the organization for planning such a route. "I hope he is well and that he comes back as soon as possible to continue with the plan for the Tour. It was an unfortunate crash on a real stupid road," said the Belgian.

Even the Jumbo sports director, Grischa Niermann, spoke and agreed with his riders. "The cyclists saw it better than I did, I only saw Steven on the ground. But the asphalt was even cracked in some places for a kilometer, it was very dangerous. He fell on a curve and dislocated his shoulder, they could only put him on the hospital. We will have to wait to see how it evolves, "said Niermann.
