Nice, city of departure for the Tour, in the red zone due to the increase in COVID-19 cases

Tom Dumoulin warned at the team presentation: "Dear fans, always wear the mask on the Tour, for you and for us."

The 2020 Tour starts this Saturday in Nice. The department of the Alpes-Maritimes, to which the city belongs, has been declared a red zone by the French Government since Thursday. A percentage of the tests higher than 5.5% confirm COVID-19 infections, and 97 of every 100,000 inhabitants test positive every day. Tom Dumoulin warned him during the team presentation: "Dear fans, always wear your mask when you come to the Tour, for you and for us." Egan Bernal expanded the instructions on his social networks: "Wear masks, keep safe distances, do not touch or push us, and wash frequently with the hydrogels."

Christian Estrosi, president of the Nice Côte d'Azur metropolis, established the mandatory use of the mask throughout Nice on 20 August. In part, for hosting the Grand Départ of the Tour and acting accordingly to the strict regulations imposed by ASO, the organizing company. However, 48 communes that make up the metropolis did not take the same step, despite an increase that exceeded 10% in the threshold of infections in the region: "We reached almost 11% from figures of 1% or 2% . We are not moving in the right direction ”. Even so, around half of the local population, oblivious to the Tour bubble, the PCR tests and its two tons of hydrogel, hardly follow the instructions of the authorities.
