Movistar Estudiantes starts their preseason against Bilbao

The collegiate team starts a series of eight preparation matches this Friday. All will be behind closed doors for COVID-19.

Movistar Estudiantes kicks off their preseason against Bilbao Basket this Friday. It will be in Burgos (19:00) and closed doors, like the other seven friendlies that the schoolboys will play until next September 13, six days before the 2019-20 Endesa League begins, to guarantee compliance with all health protocols of COVID-19 and for the safety of the workforce. The Ramireños will face in this cycle of encounters, aside from the Basques, twice against Montakit Fuenlabrada, Monbus Obradoiro, TD Systems Baskonia, the two Canarian teams (Herbalife Gran Canaria and Iberostar Tenerife) and will close with UCAM Murcia . The majority (six) will be at the Movistar Academy Magariños, the old Antonio Magariños pavilion.

The duel against the Basque team will be the starting point of Javi Zamora's first complete and absolute project. The Madrilenian replaced Aleksandar Dzikic on the bench with Estu in the last position of the table with a balance of only 4 wins in 18 games (3-3 at the beginning of the course). The results did not accompany during their only five clashes against playoff teams: one win (Unicaja) and four defeats: Andorra, Valencia, Zaragoza and Barça before the stoppage of the competition due to the coronavirus.

Pre-season Movistar Estudiantes

The favorable results did not arrive in that period, but there was a radical change in the style of play and attitude. Zamo, master of the hopeful Generation of 2000 and hard on the wing, increased the defensive intensity of the group (nonexistent with Dzikic) and the attack was ostensibly improved, putting Andorra, Valencia and Barça in trouble.

You have now designed your template and are expected to continue to move upward. It is the great hope of the Estudiantes fans, very burned after years of failures (the phrase 'defeat after defeat until the final victory' makes more and more sense), and of a club that is still trying to solve all the economic problems that it announced as the end of the institution and that are not yet resolved.

To face this new stage, Estudiantes will have a squad of 15 players. Five will be reinforcements and seven homegrown players. Alec Brown and Aleksander Cvetkovic return. John Roberson will be Phil Pressey's replacement at point guard and Ángel Delgado is the umpteenth hope for the biggest drama in recent years: the fifth spot. Nemanja Djurisic will play the role of four mobile, strong and versatile.

Dorsals next season

Édgar Vicedo will be the reference for the youth players. All his life at the Estu, the forward must remove the bad taste in his mouth from the last two courses. Adams Sola (excellent defender), Ignacio Arroyo (smart point guard) and Dovydas Giedraitis (sniper) should have many more minutes this season. The centers Gilad Levy (Israel) and Emil Stoilov (Bulgaria) will shoot more with the subsidiary than with the first team, as will one of the great pearls of Spanish basketball: Rubén Domínguez. The young Puerto Rican, a fixture in the lower categories of the National Team, can play in the three perimeter positions and left very good feelings in his debut at the EBA.

The spearheads of the Students 2019-20 will be Edwin Jackson and Aleksa Avramovic. The former returned to school in the middle of last season. In his first stage at Estu (2016-17), the forward found himself as a player and is now trying to repeat his transformation after his irregular steps through China and three Euroleague teams (Barça, Buducnost and Asvel). The Serbian, an explosive combination of one and two, is a dagger in attack: fast, agile and daring, in the scarce two months he played the previous season he averaged 14.7 points, with displays as brutal as his 35 goals against Zaragoza .
