David Martín wins the Ángel Lozano Memorial

The Contador Foundation cyclist, the new leader, beat Raúl García and his partner Vicente Hernaiz on the sprint. The Ontur test, suspended.

The Spanish Elite-Sub23 Road Cup, of which AS is half official, has experienced an exciting return to competition this Sunday with the Ángel Lozano Memorial, which has had a multitude of variants and which has ended up being resolved through a sprint that has given the victory and the leadership in the general to the fast cyclist of the Contador Foundation David Martín. The town of Valladolid has hosted the start and finish of the Ángel Lozano Memorial, which for the first time is part of the calendar of the Copa de España Elite-Sub23. And at its premiere we experienced a very eventful race, with several outstanding movements and a resolution to the sprint, which seemed a priori the most likely outcome.

Franco, García Janeiro (Froiz Supermarkets), García (Cartagena-Patatas Pijo), Albrechtsen (Antiga Casa Bellsola), González (Valverde Team) and Santos (Escribano) were the six cyclists who made up the break that took center stage during the first half of the race. This escape has come to have a little more than 2:30 minutes of advantage over the peloton, which has not given the escapees a chance and has hunted them with 70 kilometers remaining to the conclusion.

Mauricio Moreira, winner of the Guadiana Circuit, has taken advantage of the second pass through Alto del Portillo to change the rhythm and force a selection of 11 cyclists in which Vicente Hernáiz (Kometa-Xstra), Raúl García (Lizarte) or Felipe were filtered Orts (GSport) among others. The cyclist who today wore the leader's jersey, Jordi López, who already saved a difficult situation after being cut by a fall, was forced to leave when the peloton entered the last hour of competition due to gastrointestinal problems, according to informed the Lizarte team.

The forced cut by Moreira has been neutralized and several cyclists, such as Etxeberria (Caja Rural), Grávalos (Kometa-Xstra) or Iñigo González (Vigo-Rias Baixas), tried their luck within the last 25 km although without fortune due to determination of some members of the squad to seek a resolution to sprint. Before the massive arrival that decided the test, some of the great names participating in this Ángel Lozano Memorial tried it again. Raúl García has tried again to break the peloton, and although runners such as Miguel Ángel Ballesteros (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA), Edwin Torres (Vigo-Rías Baixas) or Edu Pérez-Landaluce (Kometa-Xstra) left with him, they did not succeed beat the pulse of the platoon.

In the massive arrival, the top speed of David Martín (Kometa-Xstra) has been definitive and has won the victory ahead of Raúl García, who despite being the protagonist in the main movements in the final section has had strength to cross the finish line in second position. The podium was completed by Vicente Hernáiz, also a Kometa-Xstra cyclist. Thanks to this victory and the abandonment of Jordi López, David Martín is the new leader of the contest with 215 points, while Hernáiz and Pablo Alonso, who has been 9th in the finish line, now occupy 2nd and 3rd place respectively in the general classification.

On the other hand, the Spring GP, scheduled for August 16 in Ontur (Albacete) is suspended due to the high risk of contagion of COVID-19. The Onturense Cycling Club received last Friday a communication from the Ontur City Council, based on indications from the Castilla-La Mancha Ministry of Health, in which it was indicated that the event was considered a very high risk, so it has been preferred not to go ahead.
