Carlos Sainz debuted in the third free practice a combustion engine, turbo MGU-K and MGU-H to try to solve the recurring overheating problems in his McLaren. The engineers will analyze these parameters, but the time table concludes that there has been a performance jump, because the Madrilenian signed the fourth time in the third free practice, in addition to the record in the first sector. He was eight tenths behind Lewis Hamilton, the fastest of the morning ahead of Bottas and Verstappen. The worrying thing is that he was almost eight tenths ahead of Lando Norris, his teammate.

From Silverstone, the sensors captured more temperature in the Madrid's MCL35 compared to Lando Norris and the car was completely disassembled, in addition to changing the chassis, in order to solve these incidents. They forced them to use more open and less efficient aerodynamics, thus losing top speed and compromising reliability. The last solution of the team has been to replace elements of the power unit, in the next few hours it will be known if it has taken effect.

The last free session also left a strong accident for Esteban Ocon after a recklessness by Kevin Magnussen, who braked sharply on a slow lap. The Frenchman could not avoid him and crashed his Renault against the wall. There will be investigation and possible penalty.
