Bernal leaves the Dauphiné two weeks before the Tour

The Colombian cyclist, current champion of the Tour de France, did not start the fourth stage of the Dauphiné due to back problems.

Egan Bernal, winner of the 2019 Tour de France, did not take part in the fourth day of the Critérium del Dauphiné, an appointment he disputed as a preparation for the defense of his title at the Grande Boucle, due to physical limitations. Although L'Équipe published that Bernal left the hotel to film and demand himself, which indicates that his withdrawal occurred more for prevention.

The reason for the abandonment of the Ineos leader lies in some back problems, as announced by his teammate Geraint Thomas: “Egan will not be on the stage. You have a bit of back pain, so the best thing you can do is take it easy. There is still a very short road to the Tour (it starts on August 29 in Nice), so it is essential to face it 100%. I do not think it is a major mishap, it is better to err on the side of caution. He has completed two previous competitions (Occitania and l'Ain) and, therefore, has filming and must reach the maximum goal of the season ”.

Both the rider and his team preferred to "act with caution" and opt for the withdrawal so as not to take any unnecessary risk, as happened with Richard Carapaz in Poland, since there are two weeks left before the start of the Tour and the atypical 2020 is very compressed. The Colombian was seventh overall in Dauphiné, 31 seconds behind Primoz Roglic. This test served Bernal as his last level test for the French round. Ineos' prospects for the Tour do not look at all rosy at the moment, with Thomas and Chris Froome off the hook on the mountain days and far from their optimal form, and Bernal touched.
