Bernal could run the Vuelta with Froome: "Maybe I'll go"

The British cyclist appreciated his absence in the gala round to continue recovering his form, while the Colombian left the door open for the Spanish round.

Briton Chris Froome, four-time Tour de France winner, considers his exclusion from Ineos for the French race to focus on the Vuelta "a more realistic goal", as he considers that he could not provide the necessary physical level to face the " Grande Boucle ", which will be lost for the second year in a row.

"We had to make an adjustment. If you look at where I come from after my accident, I am already happy to be able to resume my professional career. I feel that now I cannot contribute what is needed in the team for the Tour de France. The Vuelta is a more realistic goal. I come back after a strong fall in which I suffered many fractures. I have no more pain, but I have to go step by step ", explains Froome.

After his participation in the Dauphiné, where he qualified in 71st place almost an hour and a half behind the winner, it was clear to Ineos that his form was not adequate for the Tour that begins on the 29th in Nice, hence that the technicians summoned the Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz to fill his position, as well as assign the Welshman Geraint Thomas for the Giro d'Italia.

Froome will now focus its efforts on the Vuelta a España, which it has already won twice (2011 and 2017) .

The Ineos team, led by Colombian Egan Bernal, will attend the Tour de France with a team that includes Richard Carapaz, Andrey Amador, Jonathan Castroviejo, Michal Kwiatkowski, Luke Rowe, Pavel Sivakov and Dylan van Baarle.

Bernal: "Maybe I will go to the Vuelta to help Froome"

Colombian Egan Bernal (Ineos) considers that the Tour de France "will be strange" without British Chris Froome and Geraint Thomas, but he was "excited" with a "young and experienced team, while not ruling out running the Vuelta .

"I will do my best for them and for the whole team. I am excited to have this team around me for this Tour de France. We have a young team that includes Pavel Sivakov and Richard Carapaz, but also experience with riders like Michal Kwiatkowski, Luke Rowe or Jonathan Castroviejo. I think it's a good balance and I'm very happy to be part of this team for the Tour. I'll do my best for them and for the whole team. "

Bernal believes that the Giro d'Italia will be a good race for Geraint Thomas for the 3 time trials of the course.

"You should be able to save time and then defend this advantage in the high mountains," he said.

Regarding the Vuelta a España, the winner of the 2019 Tour did not rule out his presence with Chris Froome, whom he could help win his third title.

"The Vuelta a España? Who knows, maybe I'll be there to help Chris Froome. Currently, I'm focused on the Tour de France and I don't have any post-tour plans yet. But the Vuelta could be a good option."
