Benfica goes for Mariano

The Portuguese newspapers 'A Bola' and 'O Jogo' report the interest of the Lisbon club after breaking off negotiations with Cavani. Conversations between the clubs in Nyon.

Benfica wants Mariano. This is clear from the information carried on Tuesday by two of the main sports newspapers in Portugal, 'A Bola' and 'O Jogo'. In both cases, reference is made to Mariano's lack of minutes at Real Madrid and Zidane's lack of confidence in him, a situation that would be resolved with a transfer: he has only played 84 minutes throughout the course, in which he managed to do one goal (against Barcelona at the Bernabéu) .

The main issue when facing the transfer of Mariano, which prevented him from finding a team last summer, in addition to the player's desire not to move, is his salary of almost five million euros net per season. A high chip, within the reach of few teams in the Old Continent, but that Benfica should be able to face given that it was offering Cavani practically double.Cavani asked too much

Talks between the Uruguayan forward and Benfica have dragged on for weeks. After the signing of Jorge Jesús for the bench, the Las Águilas team is forming an important project to regain the Portuguese throne, which this year has been for Porto, and to return to compete in Europe: for the moment it has been reinforced with the promising German striker Waldschmidt and with defender Vertonghen, formerly at Tottenham, among others.

Cavani was going to be the icing on the cake, but the footballer's financial claims, transmitted through his brother and agent, broke the agreement: he asked for a net ten million per season, while Benfica stood at eight, well above the limit that they had originally planned to offer. Thus, the Lisbon team has the financial means to match Mariano's salary at Real Madrid; Everything would be pending the player's "yes" and the agreement between clubs, which would not be a problem, since Madrid is shedding assets this summer to find liquidity, given the economic problems derived from the coronavirus health crisis: now has sold to Achraf, De Frutos, Javi Sánchez and Dani Gómez (the last three, 50% of their rights), earning 48 million euros.

Conversations in Nyon

Mariano, 27, who finished the course with an unfortunate positive for coronavirus that prevented him from working normally for the Champions League, has not commented on the matter. Both Portuguese newspapers report that the final of the Youth League that will measure Real Madrid and Benfica this Tuesday in Nyon (Switzerland) will promote the first contacts and that Benfica's initial idea is a loan with an option to buy at the end of it. Benfica is also working on the signing of Darwin Núñez, from Almería, but it would not be an obstacle for Mariano to also arrive, as Jorge Jesús has asked for two attackers. And the relations between clubs are good: last summer the transfer to De Tomás was closed, in exchange for 20 million euros.
