Bartomeu discards the signing of Gasol: "We couldn't pay him"

The president of Barcelona praised the figure of the center of Sant Boi ("He is a person who has helped us a lot"), but he does not see him as a Barça player in the future.

Pau Gasol will not play for Barcelona, despite the rumors that placed Sant Boi in the Barça team. Josep María Bartomeu, president of the club, ruled out his signing on Barça TV. "He is a person who has helped us a lot, he is an ambassador for Barcelona and represents us in the United States. He is a star of the NBA, to whom Barça could hardly pay what is charged at the club," he said.

Gasol, who turned 40 on July 6, has not played for more than a year. His last game was on March 10, 2019, and since then he has undergone surgery twice for a navicular stress fracture in his left foot. He was not in the NBA playoffs with Milwaukee, he also missed the World Cup in China with Spain and he would not have made it to the Tokyo Games either, if they had not been postponed due to the COVID-19 crisis.

"It would be naive not to think about the withdrawal, but I still want to recover. We will see if it gives me the opportunity to continue playing," Gasol commented on Teledeporte in May. His last contract, with some Blazers with whom he did not make his debut, was for $ 2.5 million gross, which was the lowest salary of his career in the NBA.

So far, Barcelona have only incorporated one player (Nick Calathes) apart from the change on the bench, where Sarunas Jasikevicius will debut. The Barça team has not yet closed the squad: they are looking for a pivot (Jan Vesely was mentioned, who has finally stayed at Fenerbahçe), although there could also be a reinforcement in outside play (a guard or a forward) and that Víctor Claver lend a hand in the position of 'four'.
