Pep Toni Escandell, assistant and masseur of Movistar dies

At 52, Pep Toni Escandell passed away in Andorra while he was preparing with the team to return to the competition. He returned to the structure this year.

"With enormous regret we confirmed the death this Saturday, by natural causes, of our assistant Pep Toni Escandell at 52 years of age," Movistar said in a statement. Born in Palma in 1967, one of the best valued men within the structure, the masseur and assistant of the Navarre squad, lost his life in Andorra. According to the media Last Hour, he was in the Principality while preparing the return to competition of some runners. This means indicates a heart accident as the cause of death.

"Pep Toni, an endearing person and a highly respected worker in the cycling caravan, returned in 2020 to the Movistar Team structure from the Lotto Soudal group, where he was a member after eight other previous campaigns (2004-2011) in the teams of José Miguel Echávarri and Eusebio Unzué. Their loss leaves a huge gap in all of Abarca Sports, both emotionally and professionally. All of Pep Toni's colleagues wish to convey to their family and friends our affection and support in these difficult times. Rest in peace, "adds Movistar in its farewell statement.

"Very hard. All my love to family and friends of a fellow worker in Movistar. We will miss you, Pep Toni. DEP", Alejandro Valverde put on social networks. Andrey Amador, a runner who recently left Ineos after a long stay at Movistar, also reminded the assistant: "Sad news ... much encouragement to your family, friends and colleagues. Rest in peace!". Carlos Barbero, José Herrada, Nelson Oliveira, La Vuelta ... many were the runners and / or organizations that remember the Balearic Islands after his death.
