"If Evenepoel wants to continue growing, it should be tested in cyclocross"

Roger de Vlaeminck, winner of the five Monuments, said he would be delighted to see his young compatriot compete in the mud races.

Remco Evenepoel will be one of the big names to keep in mind in the return of the cycling season after the coronavirus pandemic. The young Belgian runner from the Deceuninck Quick-Step will put on a race number again in the Vuelta a Burgos (July 28 - August 1) to continue with his great 2020 season in which he took the overall in the Vuelta a San Juan and the Volta ao Algarve.

Roger de Vlaeminck, one of Belgian cycling legends and one of the three riders who has won all five Monuments alongside Eddy Merckx and Rik Van Looy, told various Belgian media that Evenepoel could further improve if he ventured into cyclocross. "Remco Evenepoel is receiving praise from everyone because it is very good and we have all seen it. If you want to continue growing, you should also try cyclocross"

De Vlaeminck believes that cyclocross would help Evenepoel to improve his running ability and avoid possible falls. "Cyclists competing in cyclocross are more skilled. I have never fallen throughout my career and it is something I learned in cyclocross"

The Belgian legend also discussed Evenepoel's options to win the Giro in what will be the debut of a great lap for the Deceuninck Quick-Step rider. "Evenepoel is not too young to win the Giro. It does not depend on age. You have to be good, it is simple. You have to be like Messi but on the bike."
