The Neila Lagoons will decide the winner of the Tour of Burgos

The fifth and last stage will conclude in Neila after you overcome the ascents to Alto del Cerro and Alto del Collado de Vilviestre.

Las Lagunas de Neila, where this edition will be promoted along a different path from that of recent years to give a new incentive to this mythical arrival, will crown the final winner of the 42nd Vuelta a Burgos that will take place -on the stage of the line- from Tuesday, July 28, to Saturday, August 1, under the organization of the Provincial Institute for Sport and Youth (IDJ) of the Burgos Provincial Council, as long as you have the required permission and always following the guidelines of COVID-19 contingencies marked by the competent authorities

This year the climb to Las Lagunas (Special Category - 1,872 meters) will be done from the Alto del Collado de Neila (3rd Category), where fans will be able to congregate since there is enough space for both vehicle parking and to enjoy the pass of the platoon maintaining sufficient interpersonal distance. Thus, the final ascent will start 4 kilometers from the finish line where the Alto del Collado de Neila is located. After a left turn, you will take the Neila direction through a road of just over a kilometer that crosses the road that comes from Quintanar de la Sierra, from where you will face the climb to the hardest part of the stage.

From the Provincial Institute for Sport and Youth (IDJ) of the Burgos Provincial Council, it has been decided to change the pattern of the ascension perfectly known to runners, teams and fans in search of a greater spectacle, since the latest editions o The direct ascent from Quintanar has been chosen, long and explosive at the end, or down to the municipality of Neila and up the back of the port. What will not change will be the hardness of the last three kilometers of ascent with an average slope of 9.6%, 8.2% and 11%, in the last kilometer, and with points with 2 kilometers to go in the final where the difference is 18% .

The stage, 158 kilometers long and starting in the town of Covarrubias, will serve to project the natural and heritage wealth of the Natural Park of the Glacial Lagoons of Neila and the Arlanza region, land of DO Arlanza wines, one of the two appellations of origin together with that of Ribera del Duero that the province of Burgos has. After the ribbon cutting in Covarrubias, in whose collegiate church is the Gothic tomb of Infanta Cristina de Norway, first wife of Infante Felipe, brother of Alfonso X el Sabio, the race will depart for Puentedura, Quintanilla del Agua, Santillán del Agua, Revilla Cabriada, Castrillo de Solarana, Solarana, Nebreda, Quintanilla del Coco and Santibañez del Val. From there, the platoon will go to the town of Santo Domingo de Silos, to make a passage through the monastery of the same name of the Benedictine monks famous for its Romanesque cloister and Gregorian chant.

Another attraction that the test will disclose will be the 'Sad Hill' Cemetery, a construction for the filming of the final scene of Sergio Leone's film 'The good, the ugly and the bad'. At kilometer 55 of the stage the Alto del Cerro will be located, the first mountainous difficulty of the day, where the cyclists will arrive after passing through the towns of Carazo, Hacinas, Pinilla de los Barruecos, Mamolar, Pinarejos, Arauzo de Miel and Huera from Rey. After the descent, and after passing the town of Hontoria del Pinar, the race will enter the final part facing the second scoring mountain pass (Alto de Collado de Vilviestre), 24 kilometers from the finish line, to reach Vilviestre del Pinar, Quintanar de the Sierra and the Alto de Collado de Neila, 4 meters from the finish line, from where the new climb to Las Lagunas will take place.
