Jonathan Castroviejo: "I really want to 2020"

The Tour and the Olympic Games time trial are marked in red in the Biscayan calendar, important this year at the Ineos.

Jonathan Castroviejo (1987, Team Ineos) met his main goals in 2019. In fact, he was an indispensable gregarious of Egan Bernal in the victory of the Colombian in the Tour de France. The French race will once again be marked in red on its calendar, as will the time trial of the Olympic Games. The Biscayan stayed four seconds from the bronze in Rio 2016 and his desire is to reach an Olympic medal in Tokyo 2020.

After disputing the Saitama Criterium in Japan and Shanghai in China, it's time to start working at home.

That's right. I have started little by little, bike, gym, cross-country skiing ... It is necessary to begin that the concentration of December arrives already and I am a little green. After the Tour so far it has been a long time and I need to feel good again on the bike. This year after the Tour I lacked a clear goal to prepare it and had demanded too much from the physicist after two months without competing since the fall of the Basque Country.

What is your balance of your 2019?

I have a good memory of the season, marked by the fall of the Basque Country. I started in Colombia, a beautiful career with his hobby, but then the body gave me a downturn. Maybe because of the height there and a career like Tirreno, a career that I like, I could not do as I wanted and then came the fall of the Basque Country that marked my year. It was a month of recovery and accelerating a lot to try to get to the Tour. In Switzerland and Championships I was fine, but after the Tour, probably because of the recovery in extremis and the whole competition, the body told me enough.

And he became part of the winning team of the Tour de France.

The goal was to win the Tour and won and with Egan, the first Colombian to get it and how he won it, proved to be the strongest; It came out perfect. With the non-continuity of the sponsorship of the Sky it was not easy to win the Tour again and the team got it. It was not easy. Above all, we find an Alaphilippe that at first was not seen as a rival. But we appeared in the last week of the Tour with him as leader and it was scary as he was and what he showed in Tourmalet. I knew that in the last two stages, at that point, nobody was going to be able to hold Egan. At 2,800 meters is another story and he could do it in the end, take the advantage to win the Tour.

The team has won seven of the eight editions. Someday that streak will break.

It's clear. The Tour is the Tour. You can not always win, by falls, performance or simply because another has been better. You have to accept it and that's it. While the number one objective of this team is that, we will always be there to try to win it, if no misfortune happens.

On the other hand, he won his fifth Spanish time trial championship.

It is not a goal but I always try to win it. It is a date that suits me, a little before the Tour. This year even more because after Switzerland it served as a test. So winning it gave me quite moral.

Another good news was the extension of his contract with Team Ineos.

The agreement was closed after the fall of the Basque Country and is a detail by the team. That means they trust you and you've done things right.

Next year he will have one more leader and he knows: Richard Carapaz.

Carapaz I know him well. For me it will not be anything new. He is a great runner. We are already nine-ten Spanish speakers. This advances. Chris sure gets back but his is a time process because his fall was very serious. Egan, Carapaz, Thomas who also did a spectacular tour, second, ... There is plenty of quality in the team.

Other equipment, such as the Jumbo-Visma, has also been reinforced.

Already on the Tour it was seen that Jumbo-Visma was very close. They have a very powerful team and have completed a very good season. Others like UAE or Bahrain have a large budget and large templates. It is good for cycling, that there is competitiveness. And, at the same time, that Ineos is renewed to do things is even better.

What do you expect next season with the novelty of the Olympic Games?

I really want to. Above all, to make a first part at a good level as I have done other years. Make a more typical calendar, more with a fixed shot, with for example Algarve, Tyrrhenian, Basque Country ... And rest for the Tour and the Olympic Games. They are two objectives that must be marked well. The days between the two are what they are, seven days until the online test, although for the chrono it is ten days. I think it is enough, although it will be complicated. Yes I think it is possible because Donostia other years is Saturday after the Tour and in Tokyo is one more day. And logically when one finishes the Tour and has the Olympiad, although it costs, you cannot relax; is to finish on the Champs Elysees and take the plane to Tokyo.

Do you have the backbone of the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro?

The truth is yes. Nor have I wanted to give it many laps, but it makes me angry to lose an Olympic medal for four seconds ... Why not next year. Japan is my favorite country to travel, I love its culture, and that gives me more motivation. Let's see if it's possible
