Toyota completes the signing of Sebastien Ogier

The Frenchman will run with Yaris next season, with Elfyn Evans and Kalle Rovanpera as partners.

They were condemned to understand each other. The signing of Ott Tanak by Hyundai left Toyota in a complicated situation and, in turn, opened the doors of the Japanese team to Sebastien Ogier. And there have been no surprises, the formation led by Tommi Makinen has culminated the signing of the Frenchman, who will run next season with a Yaris WRC and with Elfyn Evans and Kalle Rovanpera as partners.

It has not been difficult to fit the puzzle pieces. Although there was no good tuning between Ogier and Makinen, they needed each other. The Finn wanted to sign the French after the withdrawal of Volkswagen from the World Cup in 2016, but he did not play his cards well, and the now hexacampeón preferred to go to Ford first, and then to Citroën. In the French team he planned to compete the last two seasons of his sports career, but the operation was thwarted by the inferiority of the gala training against Toyota and Hyundai in an operation that has led to the withdrawal of the gala brand.

The escape from the brand-new champion, the man who has dethroned Ogier, Tanak, has opened the doors to the Frenchman who, in his opinion, is the best car today, the Yaris. "Toyota is in another category," he confessed to AS a few weeks ago. And now it will be his new weapon. The contract he has signed with Toyota is for only one season, since the Frenchman maintains his decision to retire after the 2020 World Cup. Evans and Rovanpera have signed for two years.

After this operation and the withdrawal of Citroën there are many pilots who have been unemployed. Esapekka Lappi is harmed by the end of the French team, and Jari-Matti Latvala and Kris Meeke discards Toyota. All of them have set sail for Ford M-Sport, their only salvation for next year.
