The demolition of the tribune of Vicente Calderón begins

Less and less is left so that the total demolition of the enclosure is a fact. In four months there will be nothing left of what was once the Atlético historic site.

The images of the current state of what the stadium where Atlético played for 50 years, seven months and 19 days caused impact and emotion among the rojiblancos fans. Everyone knew what would happen to Vicente Calderón, but it is not painful to see how little by little the historic clubhouse in Madrid has been disappearing. Now only the grandstand is standing, but it will be for a short time because from this week the demolition works of that tier that saw great successes of Atletico will begin.

The works will begin this week and will last several months, as it is scheduled to end in February or March. It will be the final goodbye to Vicente Calderón and in these coming months that main tribune will be demolished, the same one that welcomed the Kings of Spain, ministers and presidents of the main European and world clubs.

At the end of last year Atlético employees evicted the stadium. Gradually they were taking all their things to the Metropolitan Wanda. On December 20 of last year all employees were already at their new job site. Moving The Nations was responsible for all the boxes getting into trucks.

At the end of February the first phase of the demolition of the stadium began. The machines began to enter the stadium and the stands began to be demolished, all but the main one, whose work will begin now. The work tried to create the least possible problems for the neighborhood. For example, near the stadium there is a school, with all that this entails.

Since the stadium began to be demolished until it is done in its entirety, a year will have passed. During this time Atlético supporters have seen how the red and white stadium has been transformed. During this year many members of the Madrid club took the seats in which they sat for years at their homes. For many that memory is priceless. Atlético, on the other hand, organized exhibitions in the Wanda Metropolitano on photographs of the old stadium. Atlético organized a Solidarity Showroom with articles and photographs by Vicente Calderón that could be bought by fans who wanted it. Now the Calderón really begins his countdown and there is little left for the main stadium stand.

The project in which the Vicente Calderón stadium was included will transform a total area of 193,804 square meters, and the intention of the City Council is that the urbanization works are completed at the end of 2021, so that only the development of the buildings is pending, green areas and equipment. Atlético has already sold its plot and recently Mahou, the rojiblanco partner in this project, did it.
