"The recurrent knee injury has continued to cause me problems and as the season progressed it became clear that surgery is inevitable," Cilic announced on Facebook.

Cilic, currently number 39 of the ATP ranking, will be replaced by Ivo Karlovic, number 103, according to Croatian sports newspaper Sportske Novosti.

The best Croatian tennis player has explained that the most recent medical examinations have shown that, although he does not need to undergo this surgical operation at the moment, he does now need several minor interventions that "will keep him off the tennis court for a fairly long period."

"I will not be able to compete in the Davis Cup this month," lamented the athlete, who said he was disappointed.

The Croatian team, which will face Spain on the 20th, is made up of Borna Coric, Mate Pavic, Nikola Mektic and Ivan Dodig, while their captain, Zeljko Krajan, will have to decide on who will replace Cilic.

Coric occupies the 28th place of singles in the ATP, while Pavic, Mektic and Dodig are respectively in 17.13 and 9 doubles.

Croatia will play on November 18 against Russia, and two days later against Spain.
