Valverde returns two months later with a victory

The Murcia returned to competition in Occitania after his injury to the sacrum. He won the Aubignac climb and became the leader of the race.

Almost two months after his injury in the sacro, which forced him to retire from the Liege and no longer contest the Giro d'Italia, Alejandro Valverde reappeared with a solvent victory in the first stage of the Ruta de Occitania. A minor race against affordable rivals for his powerful sprint on the hill, but a good symptom for Tour. The Murcia was imposed in the meta high of Aubignac to the promising Eddie Dunbar, Irish Ineos, 17 years younger than him (39 by 22) .

El Movistar managed without problems the two passes to the port with the work of Valls, Prades and Pedrero. Valverde had to control the last two kilometers of the climb. He went to the attacks of Dunbar, Uran and Gesbert, or commanded the small group in the first person. He knew faster and stronger. The arcoíris took advantage of the final acceleration of Urán to finish off his rivals. Only Dunbar endured his rush terminal , with no option to overcome: "I felt great, these two months of rest and preparation came to the body well, now I have three days to defend the lead" .

It is second triumph in 2019 current world champion (the 124th of his career). He raised his arms for the first time with the jerboa arcobaleno in Jebel Hafeet, the hard arrival of the UAE Tour. "Perhaps with this garment the hunger is reduced a bit, I came to think of the curse of the rainbow," he acknowledged recently. Occitania is his last test before Tour of France, which starts on July 6 in Brussels. There he will share eight with Nairo Quintana and Mikel Landa, a tricephalia that did not work in 2018.
