Leader of the Red Raiders who lost in extremis the university final, Culver is an unexpected star with a simply irresistible potential.

The Texas Tech Raiders: the red revolution of the last March Madness and a defeated team in the photo finish of the grand final , in Minneapolis. The tide of fans of a powerful public university in Lubbock (Texas) and the sports miracle of Chris Beard, a coach who has enshrined after demonstrating that not only was sustainable but also could improve the model with which surprised a year before the hand of Keenan Evans and Zhaire Smith, number 16 of the 2018 draft. With an unbreakable spirit, a tremendous collective sense and a historical level defense, certainly one of the best of recent years, Texas Tech, with the Old Town Road by Lil Nas X turned into an unofficial hymn, was for some days the team of almost all of America. With one star above all: Jarrett Culver.

As Zhaire Smith a year earlier (played together in the 2017-18 season) Culver has been a player who appeared almost out of nowhere and shot to the top of the NBA draft. Raised on the foundations of family and faith e son of a pastor and chaplain of his university (he directs the prayers before the Texas Tech games) , Culver is the prototype player that coaches have to drag out of the fitness center. The result of his constant work is an extraordinary level and he was not guessed when it was a three-star project, a priori destined to finish much lower in this draft.

But Culver assumed gallons as a sophomore in a very transformed team and in the one that suddenly had to be, and knew to be, the leader. Last season he averaged 18.5 points and 6.4 rebounds, was the Player of the Year in the Big 12 and entered by consensus in the All American All Quintet. The university tournament confirmed its value (matchups against Northern Kentucky, Michigan and Gonzaga) even though in the Final Four it suffered a lot with the outside shot: 3/12 against Michigan State and 5/22 in the final against Virginia.

Esa, the shot, is one of the areas that can limit its tremendous potential: with a mechanics not very orthodox and that has been trying to change, which could affect their percentages last season, since the end of his first year at university. Otherwise, Culver is a diamond in the rough that has not yet learned to take advantage of everything he can do with his mix of size (for his position) and skill to handle the ball, playmaker play next to the bases, to finish near the basket and, above all, to decide matches from the defense. That is right now his great potential, an instinct to break pass lines and cover a lot of track as a defender. Spend well, play with intelligence, is disciplined and hardworking ... a player of enormous potential who will be a great star if he simply polishes his shot and settles as a top scorer, or at least reliable. The rest, with much still to develop, already takes it as standard in this landing NBA.
