89% of Chinese fans sympathize with Espanyol

This is revealed by a Kantar survey, which highlights how 64% share news about Wu Lei with friends. Espanyol accounts for 11.5% of LaLiga's audience in China.

The famous data and consulting company Kantar, through its Insights department in China, published this Friday a survey that discovers the increase in popularity of Espanyol in the country of Wu Lei as a result of the player came to the RCDE Stadium, at the end of January. Some data that, although they do not specify the sample used, show how the perico club is percolating in the Asian giant.

Concretely, an incredible 89 percent of the Chinese followers surveyed respond that "they have joined the Espanyol" . A figure that still acquires greater value if we take into account that only 67 percent know that Wu Lei previously played in the Shanghai SIPG, club in his country, and that ten percent confuses it with the Shanghai Shenhua, the other team of the city (which, by the way, Quique Sánchez Flores is currently training). Following the waste of numbers, up to 56 percent of respondents say they follow Espanyol in the social network Weibo (a sort of Chinese Twitter) and 47 percent, through We Chat (similar to Whatsapp) .

Also, A 64 percent of Chinese fans say they talk about any news about Wu Lei with their friends, with women doing the most (67 percent). And one more fact, this is no longer part of the survey but with numbers contracted by the consultancy: 11.5 percent of the total cumulative audience of LaLiga during this last season, 2018-19, corresponds to matches of Espanyol.

The head of analysis and sponsoring of Kantar Media Division, Diego Bernabé, explains that "Wu Lei is a winning bet because it exemplifies the balance between the sports value of the player and the commercial of his brand, the ideal to achieve with this type of 'exotic' hirings. He adds: "It seems logical to think that next season we will see a greater commercial development of the player figure by the club and would not be strange some addition to the list of sponsors of Espanyol based on the attractiveness of Wu Lei for the Chinese market ".
