Mugello, to the rescue of Lorenzo

The Autodromo Internazionale dell Mugello is one of those circuits that, just thinking about it, draws a smile on the face of Jorge Lorenzo. The five-time champion has achieved seven victories in this scenario throughout his career and two of them served to 'resuscitate' him when he was not going through a good moment, like now in his debut with Honda, because he arrives with his worst baggage in the queen class after the first five races of the course: 14th in the general with 16 points, to 79 of his classmate Márquez, after an eleventh, two twelfths, a thirteenth and a retirement by breakdown.

Mugello, for the third time, could return to the rescue of the Mallorcan, a talisman track for him and in which he has already flown many times. The first time he rescued this impressive transalpine route was in 2006, on the way to his first 250cc title, with Aprilia, and the second in 2018, to sign his first victory with Ducati, when he knew he would not continue with the Italian factory , something that had communicated to him after the previous appointment, in Le Mans.

Of the 68 victories that adorn his record, the one obtained in 2006 is one of the most important for Lorenzo, because without that it is very probable that many others had not arrived. After achieving the victory in the first two races of the season, in Jerez and Qatar, he went on to say that it was not possible to win all the races of the year, but his luck changed in the next three races. The fall of Turkey, the fourth in China, where his teammate Barberá also won, and the fall of France made him lose ground in a classification in which his biggest threat was Dovizioso, less brilliant, but very regular. Thus, the Balearic he needed to reset before the Italian test and, under great pressure, he got a very important victory decided on the last lap, with only 111 thousandths of advantage over De Angelis. From there he returned to the path of victory. Then came five more wins and the conquest of the title in Valencia with 17 points of advantage over Dovizioso.

The last time that Mugello came to the rescue of today's Honda rider was last year, when he was in his second season at Ducati. He already knew that Borgo Panigale's house would not renew him, due to lack of results, which did not prevent him from going on the extra motivated track, and at the end comfortable on the Desmosedici, to sign from the second place on the grid his first victory as a ducatist. Then came the victory in Montmeló, two weeks, and one more in August, the one in Austria, showing that it had been a mistake for Ducati to replace him with Petrucci for this 2019.

A to see this weekend what he is capable of. From what Lorenzo has said, the main problem is that he still does not feel comfortable about the Honda and that, although there are Fridays he starts them well (he was fourth in Le Mans), then the others evolve and he does not. Mugello, where three years ago beat his current teammate for only 19 thousandths, should be a good opportunity for his reaction.
