Madness in the lottery: the 1 of Zion is for the Pelicans and the Lakers will choose with the number 4

Bad luck for the worst of the past course and turn for the future of Anthony Davis. Fortune also smiles at the Lakers, who take the 4.

The draft lottery, which will be held on June 20 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, kept strong emotions in a year in which all eyes were on, even more than usual, in a number 1 that will be reversed except historical surprise in Zion Williamson, the Duke phenomenon that aims at a generational player. And the winner was New Orleans Pelicans, who started seventh by number of possibilities with only 6%. David Griffin, who can be considered a lucky guy, is now in charge of the dispatches: in four of the last five lotteries in which his teams have been active, they have won 1. So it was in the Cavaliers with Kyrie Irving (2011 ), Anthony Bennett (2013) and Andrew Wiggins (2014). Such is the influence of the former Duke that in the bookmakers and placed the New Orleans team among the ten favorites to take the ring next year, when before the draw were the last.

The only year that Griffin had no success was in 2012, when the 1 was for his current franchise, some Pelicans who chose Anthony Davis and who expected events to know how to handle the future of the power forward, with all the ballots to leave pierced after his public request last winter . Interestingly, it had been rumored that whoever took the 1 (the Knicks, especially) could use it to try to take over Davis but now it is the Pelicans themselves who will elect Zion. We will have to see how it affects the future of Davis, because two of his suitors, Knicks and Lakers, will choose with the numbers 3 and 4. One of those picks could, therefore, end up being also finally the New Orleans franchise. At the moment, the up to now Pelicans franchise player has already made it known that his intention has not changed a bit despite what happened tonight and still wants to leave Louisiana.

The first turn of events was, in fact, tremendous . In the cut of the top 4 that is decided by the hype (the rest follows a reverse order to the classification) went Pelicans, Lakers, Grizzlies and Knicks. And they left out teams like Cavaliers and Suns, who with the Knicks formed the trio of worst of last season, all with a 14% chance of winning the 1. The Cavs and the Suns, in fact and in the new system released with this draw, they had up to 52% to enter that top 4 that seemed to be vetoed for Grizzlies (26%) and especially for una Lakers (9.4%), which have given one of the biggest leaps in history to pass the theoretical number 11 to 4. The greatest remain the ten positions of the Magic in 1993, when they went from 11 to 1 and chose Chris Webber, who later transferred to Golden State Warriors.

Mala luck, then, for favorites in the race for Zion that, yes, was not especially excited about his more than likely march to New Orleans. According to the US media, his big dream was to finish in the Knicks. But in the Big Apple have had to settle for a bitter number 3 after a year of dreaming (and accumulate defeats) with the 1. Cavaliers and Suns fall to 5 and 6, Bulls to 7 ... The Hawks have not had too much luck with his pick (8) but they have secured the Mavericks they got in the transfer of Luka Doncic (had top 5 protection) and will choose twice in the top 10 (8 and 10). The Grizzlies are of course another of the great winners. His pick had protection top 8 or would go to the Celtics, something that finally looked with good eyes in Tennessee ... until they have received that succulent 2, which should give them a basic piece in their reconstruction.
