Carapaz and Landa follow Nibali in the Mortirolo; Roglic gives

The Italian went on the attack from afar, but Movistar defended magnificently. Roglic left 1:22 with them. Ciccone took the stage.

Like cotton, Mortirolo does not cheat. It is an extreme port, that strips the miseries of those who do not have the legs necessary to face 11.9 kilometers at 10.9% . His terrible ramps showed that Primoz Roglic is not right now among the strongest runners of the Giro. The Slovenian fell of mature of the small group of the favorites when Vincenzo Nibali ignited the fuse. Thanks to the collaboration of Simon Yates and Bauke Mollema, he did not waste any more time at Ponte di Legno: 1:22 with Nibali, who beat him for second place, and the very solid Richard Carapaz, who took another good bite in the defense of the pink, and Mikel Landa, fourth in the general standings at 1:06 in Roglic.. And there are three finals in the standings, with one stage before the end of the Verona time trial.

Nibali, winner of four major (two Spins, one Tour and a Vuelta), Like such palmarés for his ambition and intelligence. As soon as he made sure of the weakness of his rivals he ordered Pozzovivo to increase the pace and launched himself into attack. El Movistar controlled the situation with a huge Antonio Pedrero, and with Landa and Carapaz in the first person. As in 2015, the Basque completed a brilliant ascent to Mortirolo, as did the Ecuadorian. They made it so easy that it seemed his ascension to two to Acebo in the last Tour of Asturias. Along with Nibali, Carapaz and Landa got hooked Superman López, who is missing, but he makes up for it with courage, and Hugh Carthy (a 24-year-old former from Caja Rural), one of the revelations of this Giro in the mountains. Roglic, Mollema, Simon Yates, Majka, Zakarin, Polanc, Sivakov ... no endured the demand of Mortirolo. Agony, cold, rain ... Cycling.

With the wet road and a very dangerous descent, Nibali chose to collaborate with Movistar to distance Roglic. Caruso and Antonio Nibali, for Vincenzo, entered the breakaway that formed from the start; Juul-Jensen and Snow, for Simon Yates; Bilbao, Villella and Hirt, for Superman; Bouwman, for Roglic; and Amador, for Carapaz and Landa. Menos Hirt, who claimed the victory for Ciccone, all fulfilled their mission of supporting the leaders of their teams to a greater or lesser extent. Decisive was the contribution of Caruso and Amador in the false plain on the way to the finish line. The support that Roglic and Nibali did not offer in the previous mountain days was found on this occasion by the Sicilian in the telephone squad: there is a common enemy for the Verona clock. The triumph was pointed at him by the combative Azzurri maglia, Giulio Ciccone , which reached its second success in the Italian round after that of the 2016 edition.
