Bertens eliminates Ostapenko and Stephens throws Azarenka

The Dutch, seventh favorite, easily beat the Latvian Ostapenko (6-4 and 6-3) and Sevastova was quoted in the second round. Stephens suffered against the Belarusian (6-4, 2-6 and 6-2).

Murua Madrid Open champion, Czech Petra Kvitova, will continue to defend her crown at least one more week after her victory in the second round against Kristina Mladenovic, who defeated her in two sets (6-3 yrs. 7-6 (5)) and one hour and 56 minutes of play.

Kvitova did not finish fine in the service, with seven double faults and a poor 55% of the first ones, but neither did Mladenovic better (seven other doubles and a 56 %), which was also slightly less effective than its rival in the occasions of break that took (two of five converted by three of seven for the Czech) and ended up paying. Kvitova, now in the second round, will now face another Frenchwoman, Caroline García, or the Romanian Cirstea.

Kiki Bertens, seventh favorite of the Mutua Madrid Open, qualified for the round of 16 after easily defeating Jelena Ostapenko (6-4 and 6-3 in 80 minutes). The 27-year-old Dutchman, finalist of the tournament last year, dominated her opponent with her serve power: up to 11 aces placed to lose only twice her serve.

Bertens will now face the Latvian Anastasija Sevastova (12th), which could with the Romanian Mihaela Buznarescu in two sets: 6-3 and 6-4 in 1h: 20. Very solid from the back of the court, Sevastova won 81% of the points played with first serves.

Other of the favorites, the eighth seed of the US series Sloane Stephens, fell to the former number one in the world and double winner of the Open of Australia (2012 and 2013) Victoria Azarenka, not without suffering. Stephens, who also knows what it is to win a Grand Slam (US Open 2017), required three sets (6-4, 2-6 and 6-2) to advance to eighths, where he is already waiting for the winner of the duel between the Chinese Zheng and the French Cornet.
