Why Miguel Ángel López is nicknamed 'Superman'?

The flamboyant winner of the Volta a Catalunya, 25 years old, hides a curious story of bravery during his youth that left him with that nickname.

Miguel Ángel López shone during all the last week in the Volta a Catalunya, with special mention to his victory in La Molina that, in the end and suffering in the final day for Montjuïc, gave him the title in the general classification. It is by no means the first great success for this 25-year-old Colombian. Always in the ranks of Astana since his professional debut (2015), Superman has already won a Tour of Switzerland, two stages in the Tour of Spain and two podiums (both in the third box) in the Vuelta and the Giro last season.

But ... what is the nickname of Superman? Everything goes back to 2011. Training for a youth career in his country, two robbers rushed Miguel Ángel López to steal his bicycle. "With my appearance and my body, the thieves thought that they would take it away from me, but it was not like that", one of the great stars of Astana has already mentioned several times. He defended himself and, despite receiving two stabs in his right leg, managed to return home with his precious bicycle. "Anyone would have done it, right?"

It was eight days recovering from the wounds but he was able to participate, even with the very recent physical problems, he managed to compete. In that race, he escaped at a stage with a considerable advantage. then, he was a stranger, and the narrator of the race said: "There goes Superman!" . And with Superman he stayed. Now, after his victory in Catalunya, he ran as one of the great favorites for the final triumph in the Giro of Italy.
