The Suns kick Kokoskov, the coach who triumphed with Doncic's Slovenia

The Phoenix Suns have made public the dismissal of their coach, the first in the history of the NBA born in Europe, after finishing penultimate with a record of 19-63.

Igor Kokoskov has stopped being coach of the Phoenix Suns. This was announced by the general manager of the team, James Jones: "After evaluating everything, I determined that it is best to take a new direction in the coach position. I want to thank Igor for his work during the last season and wish him luck in his future efforts ".

A year, therefore, is what has lasted the adventure of the first coach born on European soil to direct a franchise of NBA. Kokoskov is going with a record of 19-63, the second worst in the league just ahead of the Knicks. It also goes with the worst record in the history of the franchise (23.2% of victories) since the first they played in the season 68-69. According to Adrian Wojnarowski, the decision would have been precipitated by the interest of the franchise in Monty Williams, current assistant Brett Brown in the Sixers. The Suns would like him as the new coach and the interest of the Lakers (Pelinka has already spoken with him and is going to meet with Jeannie Buss this week) would have made the dismissal of Kokoskov accelerated.

The Serbian coach had gone through a multitude of Benches of the League as an assistant before arriving in Phoenix: Clippers, Pistons, the Suns themselves, Cavaliers, Magic and Jazz. But it was his job at the head of the Slovenia national team that gave him full recognition. With it he won the Eurobasket of 2017, leading a team in which Goran Dragic was MVP and Luka Doncic showed all the potential that he treasured to the greatest success in his history.

Considered as a talent in the attack game, a Kokoskov The planning of the template has taken its toll. On the one hand to be one of the least experienced in the entire NBA: has started 36 games with three rookies in the starting quintet; the following have been the Hawks with only four encounters. But has also missed a base, a position for which the Suns are still looking for a candidate to occupy.

The latest news was that if you take the number 1 of the next draft, the Arizona team could choose Ja Morant (base) before Zion Williamson. This decision draws attention twice. The first and most obvious, it is difficult to understand that at this point someone would prefer to choose another player can take Zion. And the second, that in the last draft, when they had the first election and were already looking for a base, they preferred Ayton (pivot) ahead of Doncic, player who knew perfectly the newly hired Kokoskov and with whom he had already triumphed.

This dismissal is the seventh in the last eight seasons on the bench of the Suns, who since the 2012-13 season share the worst balance of the league with the Magic (199-375) .
