Natalia Fischer sweeps and Valero finishes second behind Becking

In the first stage of the Andalucía Bike Race, a 37km time trial, two Spaniards finished on the podium. The mud was the protagonist.


The Andalucía Bike Race 2019 gave the starting signal with a 37-kilometer time trial (departure and arrival in Linares) very explosive, where the mud marked to a large extent the route by the rains of recent days. The Dutch Hans Becking surprised big favorites like the champion, the Portuguese Tiago Ferreira, to claim victory and be the first leader of the race. After him two Spaniards finished: David Valero (30 seconds) and Víctor Manuel Fernández (at 1:10 ') .

Valero was satisfied at the end of the stage despite the difficulties: "Day complicated by water and mud , with conditions 100% mountain bike. Good feelings for being the first day, comfortable.We will see tomorrow, in the first stage in line, if I can defend the second position and try to attack the leader a little. conserve because they are 6 stages that will be invoiced ".

In feminine category it was imposed with great authority Natalia Fischer. The Spanish came out with conviction and imposed its law from the first kilometers. The great favorite, the Norwegian Hildegunn Hovdenak, finished second to almost a minute, probably, saving forces for the next stages. On the other hand, Stefanie Paul closed the podium.

At the end of the stage, Fischer acknowledged that he expects to raise his level in the next days: "Today I went from less to more, always controlling. I knew it was a tough test and, despite the rain and the mud, I felt good, it's a long race, so we will go from less to more, to control in the technical areas that we will find tomorrow, I hope to be competitive ".

Tomorrow there will be marathon stage

The second stage of Andalucía Bike Race 2019 presents a route of 75.2 kilometers and 1,252 meters of altitude with departure and arrival also in Linares. A stage that starts as the basis of the second stage of the last edition with more trails and passage through places next to swamp of the Rumblar with a new and intense end for the mining district of Linares.
