Remco Evenepoel shines in his professional debut in San Juan

The Belgian was the protagonist in the first stage on the way to Pocito, where he worked for his teammate Álvaro Hodeg in search of victory in the sprint that finally took Fernando Gaviria. After his first stage as a professional, many media asked the Belgian cyclist how his feelings were. "I expected that I would be harder and suffer more with the high pace at the end but I worked well, I was ahead with the team, I did not fall, it was a great success. It was a difficult moment but I avoided the fall. I was very happy, the race was calmer than when I was running against the juniors I rolled in the first 20 positions all day and I think Sagan saw me because he gave me a compliment that will motivate me for the next few days ", commented Evenepoel a Cyclingnews.

In the second day of the race, with four previous steps by Punta Negra before the last climb to the finish, Evenepoel also knew how to keep the guy resisting in the top group during the last climb while his teammate Julian Alaphilippe achieved the stage win. Evenepoel finished in 15th place, tied to times with Alaphilippe and other favorites like Peter Sagan or Nairo Quintana, which allowed him to position himself as the new leader of the youth classification tied with Swiss Gino Mäder, another of the young promises to follow, and of the Colombian Sebastián Castaño.

Evenepoel has another important challenge this Tuesday, since he will face his first time trial as a professional in the 12 kilometers with start and finish in Pocito. The Belgian already showed in junior category that he also knows defend against the clock and expect to prove it also before the elite of the platoon.
